Hair With Gimp

You can use GIMP to digitally try on a new hairstyle.

If you want to see what you would look like with a different hair style, you can use the graphics design program GIMP to preview the change. With a digital photo of you and a digital photo containing the hair you want to add, you can use GIMP to isolate the hair and merge it onto a photo of you. GIMP's advanced editor will even enable you to adjust the color curves within the hair photo to realistically blend the two images together.

Instructions

1. Launch GIMP and open the photo you want to add hair to by clicking "File" and "Open." A GIMP workbook featuring your photo as the background will appear.

2. Select "File" and "Open as Layer" the hair photo you want to merge onto the background. Click on the "Move Tool" and double-click and drag the hair layer to where you want it positioned. If needed, click on "Image" and "Scale Image" to resize the hair layer. .

3. Click on the "Eraser Tool" and drag your cursor across any unwanted background still visible within the hair photo. Change the brush type and scale, if needed, to reach inside small corners. Locate the drop-down view box at the bottom of the workbook to zoom in to 200 percent or 400 percent for a detailed look at your workbook.

4. Select "Colors" and "Curves" to adjust the color curve of the hair layer so that it better matches your background photo. The Curves dialog will appear featuring a grid and curve. Click once above the curve if you want to lighten the hair, or click once below the curve if you want to darken the hair. Double-click on the dot you placed and drag the curve upwards or downwards until the preview is in line with your preferences. Click "OK" when satisfied.

5. Click on "Layer" and "Merge Down" to combine the two layers into one. Save the file using a picture extension such as ".jpg" or ".png."
