If you have a large backyard in which you can dry your clothes, want to save energy but don't want a permanent fixture, you can make your own portable clothesline. This do-it-yourself project requires only PVC piping and rope, along with hand tools. Within an hour, you'll have a clothesline you can move to get the most sun during the day and to put aside when not in use.
Instructions
1. Cut three 6-foot-long sections of PVC piping with a hacksaw. Lay them on the ground in a U-shape. Spread plumber's glue around each end of the pipes. Put four 4-way side outlet PVC tees over the end of two of the 6-foot-long PVC pipes to form an attached U. You will have two 4-way pieces at the top and bottom of two 6-foot pipes to attach to the third 6-foot pipe to form the clothesline's overall U-shape.
2. Cut eight 2-foot sections of PVC piping. Stand the U upright, cover one end of four of the eight 2-foot pipes with plumber's glue, then insert the glued ends into the 4-way side outlet PVC tees at the bottom of the U to form feet. Place an end cap on each of the feet.
3. Put glue on one end of each of the four remaining 2-foot PVC sections and insert the glued end into the 4-way side outlets on the top of the U to create arms. Put end caps on all four pipes.
4. Cut about 8 feet of rope to stretch from one arm to the other on opposite ends. Wrap the rope around the arms and tie off the rope on the opposite side to create two lines over the U-shape. You now have a portable clothesline to move around your yard.
