Hanging Strategies For Shelves Or Ledges

Shelves with stuffed animals

Shelves are the perfect storage and display area for all of your nick-knacks and pictures. But shelves seem to never go up as easily as you would like. Don't be the person putting 10 holes in the wall to put up one shelf. Use some simple tips that will allow you to hang any shelf easily.

Use a level

Level

Using a level will take the guess work out of whether a shelf is tilting or not. Hold the shelf on the wall where you want it. Place a level toward the front of the shelf and make a mark on the wall all the way along the top of the shelf. This line will act as a guide to whether your shelf is level or not and also gives you an easy reference to measure from for the mounting holes.

Pin Marking

Pin marking is a technique used to mark where the mounting holes of a shelf are if they are not able to be seen from the front of the shelf. Take thumb tacks and insert them into the slots on the back the shelf. Once you know exactly where you want the shelf, press the shelf straight into the wall and remove. You will see two pin marks where your hanging nails should go. You can now insert your hanging nails or screws and the shelf hangers will line up exactly.

Masking Tape

Take masking tape and tape it to the back of the shelf where the hanger slots are. Poke holes into the tape where the mounting slots are. Remove the tape and apply the tape to the wall where you would like your shelf. Install your mounting nails or screws and remove the tape.

This method works particularly well when hanging multiple shelves with picture arrays.
