Make Homemade Silk Screen Boxes

Make a silk screen box from scratch.

Silk screening is a time-tested art that involves the dragging of paints or inks, one color at a time, across a surface to transfer onto a piece of paper or fabric. While you can buy a silk screen box pre-made, to fully experience the homemade quality of this art form, you should make your own. Thankfully, the materials are inexpensive and you can create this item in an afternoon.

Instructions

1. Buy a wood picture frame to the size you will need. The size should be six inches larger then the image you will print. You will need a frame that's about 2 inches thick with a simple square shape.

2. Measure out the length and width of the frame. Add two inches to the measurements. If the frame is 8 inches by 8 inches, add two inches to get 10 inches by 10 inches. Cut a piece of silk screen fabric to the measurement you have. In this case, it would be 10 by 10 inches. Staple one side of the fabric to the under side edge of the wood frame.

3. Pull and stretch the fabric over the opening of the frame. Staple it to the underside of the frame opposite to the side you stapled in step 2. Pull and staple the two loose sides to the undersides of their frame edges. Fold the fabric corners down onto the wood frame, pulling tight and staple in place. Keep doing this until the screen across the opening of the frame is tight and smooth, making the perfect silk screen box.

4. Wash the silk screen box with cool soapy water, allow the silk screen box to air dry in the sun. Store the silk screen box in a cool dry place between use.
