Use Oil Pastel Pens On Gourds

Decorate gourds using almost any medium, including oil pastel pencils.

Oil pastel pencils are similar to traditional lead pencils. The oil pastel is inside of a wooden pencil. It can be sharpened and used like any other pencil. Oil pastel pencils do not make the mess that other forms of oil pastels can make. Additionally, they offer a smooth, matte finish. Use the oil pastel pencils to decorate gourds. The pencils allow more control as you decorate the gourd.

Instructions

1. Cover the work space with newspaper. Place the gourd on the newspaper. Tape the edges of a stencil design onto the gourd. A design can be drawn on without using a stencil.

2. Trace the outline of the design with a #2 pencil. Remove the stencil and tape. Fill in the stenciled area with the oil pastel pencils. Work from one side of the gourd to the other. Allow sections to dry before moving on to prevent smudges.

3. Allow the design to dry overnight.

4. Keep the gourd on the newspaper. Spray the gourd with a sealant. It provides a clear coating that prevents the oil from smudging. Use a sealant for oil-based mediums. Other sealants will not fully protect the artwork. Follow the manufacturer's instructions when using the sealant.
