Write A Biography Statement

Writing a biographical statement involves putting your life in perspective.

Biographical statements highlight an individual's strengths and achievements, and are often required for job and award applicants. However, it can be difficult to put your own life into perspective and write a biographical statement that is relevant and coherent. Writing about yourself need not be a challenge. Taking a few moments to think about your life experiences and choosing the most relevant details can go a long way toward making this an easy task.

Instructions

1. Consult any guidelines given to you by your employer, interviewer, instructor or awards committee for length, style and clarity.

2. Formulate a topic sentence that gives the reader a general idea of the most significant aspect of your life at the moment. For example: Jean-Michel Smith is a licensed homeopathic doctor.

3. Mention briefly your place and date of birth and current city of residence. For example: Born in Montreal, Quebec, on April 28, 1976, Smith currently resides in Muncie, Indiana.

4. Write a sentence about a formative experience. If you overcame an unusual challenge early in life or have traveled extensively, write a line about it. For example: After graduating from Brock University with a degree in biology, Smith backpacked around China for several months.

5. Include a sentence evaluating the impact of that formative experience. For example: While in China, he was able to explore his interest in traditional Chinese medicine.

6. Write a sentence about your greatest career-related achievements or community contributions. For example: In 2002, Smith graduated summa cum laude from the American Medical College of Homeopathy and has since dedicated his life to helping others maintain their health through homeopathic medicine.

7. Create a sentence in which you use an evocative adjective to describe yourself and your hobbies. For example: Smith is also an avid hiker.

8. Conclude with an unusual aspect of your life that might affect a reader's evaluation of you. For example: Smith’s lifelong dream has been to climb Mount Everest.

9. Add or delete information so that your statement meets length requirements and style guidelines.
