Draw Faces For Kids

Drawing is captivating for kids.

Kids love to draw. The most interesting subject matter for them to draw is a face--human or animal. Teaching kids to draw faces can cultivate an interest in art that can carry them through their lives. Using erasable guidelines helps to position the features on the face to make it easier to learn. Creating a basic face can be done with a few steps.

Instructions

1. Picture what an egg looks like. Draw an egg shape with the wide part at the top and the narrow part of the egg at the bottom. This is the basic shape of the face. Typically, a human face has a broader forehead than chin.

2. Draw a very light, erasable horizontal line cutting the egg in half. Draw another very light horizontal line halfway between the line you just drew and the bottom of the egg shape. Draw one more horizontal line halfway between the line you just drew and the bottom of the egg shape. You should now have an egg shape with three horizontal lines in its lower half.

3. Draw a very light, erasable vertical line down the center of the egg shape. Mark two small vertical guidelines onto the top horizontal line halfway between the side and the center on each side. These will be the pupils of the eyes.

4. Add horizontal ovals around the vertical guidelines you just made. These are the eyes. The ovals should not go all the way to the sides of the face, and there should be a space about one oval wide between them.

5. Across the bottom horizontal line you drew, draw a banana-shaped mouth. Don't extend it further out than the pupils of the eyes. Draw a line through the banana to indicate two lips.

6. Mark two large dots on the middle horizontal line, on either side of the vertical line. These are the nostrils of the nose. On the outer sides of the nostrils draw lines going upward toward the eyes and inward toward the center vertical line. They will not touch the line.

7. Eyebrows are an extension of the nose. Continuing from the lines you just drew draw arches up, out and over the eyes. End the eyebrows where a point would be if you were to draw a line from the outer nose beyond the outer corner of the eye.

8. Make a C shape starting on the side of the face where the largest horizontal eye line ends, going down to the horizontal nose line ends. Make a backward C on the other side of the face where both of those lines end.

9. Erase your vertical and horizontal lines.

10. Color hair in on the top of the head and around the face.
