Washers and dryers are essential components in turning your favorite T-shirt vintage.
Buying a new T-shirt can be an exciting prospect, especially if you find one that seems to fit your personality as well as your body. However, many modern fashion trends seem to steer towards the aged and faded. Vintage-looking clothing is all the rage, and consumers can purchase torn jeans and faded T-shirts. If you've found the perfect new T-shirt but you want to go for the vintage look, take a little time with some basic household items to wear down the shirt, so it appears vintage and worn.
Instructions
1. Mix washing soda and salt into a large mixing bowl. Stir the two ingredients together with a stirring spoon for optimal effect.
2. Put the T-shirt into your laundry machine with other garments you want to make vintage. If you do not have other garments, use a clean towel that you don't mind damaging with color run off. Start the washing machine on its regular cycle, with high heat. Add your usual detergent, and once the water has risen above the garments, pour in the soda/salt mixture.
3. Dry the shirt in a dryer on high heat; the heat will weaken the fibers and allow the soda/salt combination to more easily fade the T-shirt.
4. Mix a half batch of the soda/salt combination and launder the T-shirt the same way at least three more times, until you have achieved the desired faded and vintage look. Add the soda/salt mixture each time, and dry after each wash for best results.
5. Rub fine-grit sandpaper over any logos on the shirt to create a faded look on the logos. Move in circular motions, but in an irregular pattern, to create a more natural aged look.
