Start An In Your Own Home Photo Studio

A digital SLR camera is a must have for any serious photographer.

Starting a home-based photography business is a good way for an amateur photographer to turn their passion into a viable enterprise. A home photo studio likely will specialize in head shots, portraits, baby, pet and family photos. It will save the photographer money on renting studio space and time on commuting. Although weddings tend to be the bulk of paid photography work, the studio will serve as a great base from which the photographer can work.

Instructions

1. Set up a space for the studio. The home studio should have dedicated space that does not interfere with the rest of the house. If clients have to enter the studio, it looks more professional if they do not have to walk through the whole house to get to it. A separate entrance from outside is ideal. The space must be big enough to accommodate lights, backdrops, a desk for the photographer and enough space to take creative shots.

2. Buy equipment. A good photographer will need a digital single lens reflex (SLR) camera, and a decent model with lens will cost $3000 to $5000. The studio must have a light kit. Light kits almost always come with three pieces: a primary light, secondary light and back light. An average kit can cost between $500 and $2000. The studio will need backdrops and a stand, which can cost around $500. All of these supplies can be purchased at photography stores. The photographer should also have a computer with photo editing software, like Adobe Photoshop, to edit the images.

3. Build a portfolio. Photographers typically rely on word of mouth and their portfolio to get new clients. Build a decent portfolio by shooting friends and those you know first. Create a website that displays your best photos and services offered. The better the technique and portfolio, the more demand there will be for the photographer.
