Creating A Piano Keyboard

What's Involved?

To build a piano keyboard you need to have good woodworking skills. It can be done, but the process is difficult and exacting. Each key needs to be created to specific dimensions and the keys must be identical. Piano keys all have the same shape; however, the flat and sharp keys overlap the regular keys and connect to the keyboard switches. This means some keys need to allow space for the sharp and flat keys to be depressed without depressing the regular keys.

How Are They Built?

To build keys you need to set up high-quality woodworking tools. They include a grinder, saw and router. You will also need braces and clamps to hold the keys. A complete diagram of a keyboard is also a necessity. The keys are typically cut from a flat plank, according to the diagram, and then finely sanded and shaped using a grinder, sandpaper or a router. The keys are also coated in enamel.

Time Considerations

It will take a lot of time to build a keyboard, especially if it is your first time making one. Give yourself at least a couple of weeks to complete the project and don't expect extraordinary results the first time. It also might be a good idea to build a mock-up or practice keyboard first. This will take you through all the steps, so you can learn faster and produce a better keyboard the next time.

Books and Information

There are many books and other information on building a piano keyboard. These will be very helpful in showing you how professional pianos are made. They also offer tips, advice and how-to instructions on creating keyboards, piano bodies and other parts of the instrument. You can find DVDs and courses as well. See the references below.
