Launched in 1913 by a group of women at Howard University, Delta Sigma Theta is a Greek-lettered sorority that focuses on the African-American community, academic achievement and public service. Delta Sigma Theta has an open membership policy. Women of any race, religion or nationality can apply for membership through sorority chapters at their universities, according to Delta Sigma Theta. The Debutante Cotillion program targets high school students, encouraging young women to volunteer in their communities and providing them with scholarship funds for college. The program culminates in a formal dance where the Delta Sigma Theta debutantes are presented to society.
Instructions
1. Locate the chapter of Delta Sigma Theta nearest you by doing an Internet search. (See Resources for the Delta Sigma Theta website.)
2. Download the Cotillion application from the Delta Sigma Theta website. Provide your background information. Applications typically ask for names, addresses and contact information for your parents, school and people to call in case of emergencies.
3. List your school and community activities, any honors you've received for special achievements, jobs and hobbies. If are deficient in any of these areas, take action. Volunteer for local community projects and organizations, helping with fund-raising drives for charity, for instance, or working at your local blood bank or delivering free food to the needy. Sign up for school activities and clubs.
4. Write a brief essay or personal statement as specified in the application. Think about how you want to respond to the essay's question. Organize your thoughts and supporting information. Be creative so that you stand out when compared to other candidates for the Cotillion program. When you have finished the essay, ask your parents or teachers for feedback and proofreading.
5. Request an official transcript from your high school administration. It must be sent to the Delta Sigma Theta chapter in a sealed envelope.
6. Decide on the people you'll ask to provide letters of recommendation. You will need one or two letters from teachers, employers, community leaders or clergy. Make a short list of people who know you, your work and character. Ask them to recommend you and provide a deadline for the letters.
7. Sign the completed application. Send the application and supporting materials to your local Delta Sigma Theta chapter.
