A beautifully designed flower arrangement can add a unique personal touch to any home decor. Not only is making an arrangement easy, it allows for unlimited individual creativity and expression whether using silk, dried, artificial or live flowers to achieve the final result.
Instructions
1. Visualize the type and color of the arrangement you want to create then select the flowers that are best suited to create it along with an appropriate container that will not only hold the flowers but one that will also complement the arrangement. Once the flowers and container have been determined, place these along with any other supplies in a well-lit area with plenty of room to work.
2. Arranging silk, dried or artificial flowers can be achieved by placing a block of florist foam inside of the container. Whether it's a basket, metal, ceramic, clay or wood container and depending on the style and dimensions, it's possible the foam block will need to be cut in order for it to fit properly inside the container. The foam block should fill the majority of the container so it's possible more than one block will be needed. The top of the foam block should not exceed the top of the container.
3. Start placing the first set of primary flowers into the center of the foam block inside the container. These should be the tallest flowers. If you want to vary the height of the flowers so that the arrangement goes from tall in the middle to gradually sloping down to shorter flowers at the rim, use the craft scissors and clip the flower stems. This can be done for both primary and secondary filler flowers. Continue placing primary and filler flowers into the foam making sure to face the flowers so that they are pointing in all directions from within the arrangement. Periodically step back and look at the arrangement from all sides to be sure it's symmetrical and that there are no thin or empty places. Also check that the different flower types and flower colors have been evenly dispersed throughout the arrangement. For the finishing touch to the arrangement, cover any bare areas of the foam block with bits of moss. Do this by working the moss in and around the flower stems. You can add an additional flower to help secure the moss or you can use clear hot glue.
4. Fill clear glass flower containers with gem stones, river stones or acrylic water to hold silk, dried or artificial flowers in place. How much you use will be determined by the size and height of the container. Gem stones come in a variety of vibrant colors and can be used as both a complement and as contrast to the color of your arrangement while river stones lean more towards the earth tones of grey, slate, brown and beige and acrylic water is clear. All are study components that will hold flowers in place.
5. Follow the same rules when arranging fresh flowers as you do when working with artificial flowers. Depending on the size of the container, begin by filling it approximately half full with water. Clip the stems of the flowers to allow for varying heights and also clip any extra leaves. Start placing the tallest and most primary flowers in the center of the container first and then add shorter flowers and any other flower types, if applicable. Continue to build the arrangement by adding different heights and colors while maintaining the balance of the overall arrangement.Look at the arrangement from all sides and make any necessary adjustments. For the final touch, add greenery, such as wispy fern to highlight the arrangement.
