Homemade clay
is fun for kids and adults.
Clay can be used as a medium for art projects at all grade levels. An alternative to buying clay at an art supply store is to make a workable clay using household ingredients. Homemade clay is not the same type of clay as Play-Dough or modeling clay, but it is suitable for art projects. This type of clay will harden and hold a shape after being baked in an oven. It can be dyed before baking or painted afterward.
Instructions
1. Pour flour and salt into a mixing bowl. Stir the contents with a spoon or spatula until mixed.
2. Pour the oil into the water. Slowly pour the mixture into the dry ingredient while mixing everything with the spoon. Knead the mixture with your hands to achieve an even consistency. If the clay seems dry, mix in small amounts of water. The clay can be colored with food coloring, if desired.
3. Use the homemade clay to craft the art project. Bake the clay in a 250 degree F oven for 45 to 60 minutes. Allow clay to cool completely before handling it. Once the clay is cooled it may be painted, if desired.
