Southern belles
should never smoke.
If you have to role play a southern belle, either for a part in a play or even if you're just dressing up like one for Halloween, there are plenty of tips and tricks you can use to convince everyone you reign from the South. You may simply want to act like a southern belle in your real life, in an attempt to change yourself. Southern belles from the 19th century weren't as selfish and dim-witted as they're portrayed; many of them were cultured and educated.
Instructions
1. Stay current on world events. Remain cultured by consistently reading, visiting art museums, seeing the latest movies and learning about history. You should be able to talk about current events and cultural activities with friends and family members.
2. Wear beautiful, luxurious clothing. Elaborate gowns were worn to special events. In day-to-day life, you don't have to wear a fancy gown, but can dress up in pretty blouses and pants. Never smoke. Also, part of maintaining your appearance is taking care of your hygiene. Make sure that your breath is always fresh by sucking on mints; don't chew gum, which isn't ladylike.
3. Remain polite at all times, even when it's difficult to stay calm and sweet. Southern belles don't show that they're angry when in public. Smile constantly, be open and friendly. Say "Please" and "Thank you." Always be genuine, not fake. Part of always being polite is making sure to send thank you notes after an event or when you receive a gift.
4. Host parties, get-togethers and events at your home. Make sure that your entire house is perfectly clean and organized. Prepare a large meal with at least five courses, making sure to put out hors d'oeuvres that your guests can enjoy as they're waiting for dinner. Serve wine with dinner and make sure the conversation is cultured, lively and engaging for all.
