Watching Tamil DVDs is not impossible if you do not know the language.
Tamil is a native language of India and is primarily spoken in the southeast region of India and in Sri Lanka, an island off the southeast Indian coast. Because Tamil is not widely taught around the world, watching a DVD in Tamil presents a difficult challenge for most non-native Tamil speakers. Fortunately, options exist to help viewers get around the language barrier and enjoy the movies regardless of their native language.
Instructions
1. Turn on subtitles. Find the DVD's "Options," "Languages," "Settings" or other similar menu and turn on subtitles in English or another language you understand well. You will hear the spoken Tamil, but you will be able to follow along with what the people on the DVD say by reading the subtitles at the bottom of the screen.
2. Change the spoken language of the DVD. If the producers of the DVD recorded the script in other languages, you will find the different language options in the "Languages," "Settings," "Options" or other similar menu. Choose English or another language that you speak and understand. The characters' lips will still move as if they are speaking Tamil, but you will hear your chosen language instead.
3. Translate the script of the DVD. If the DVD does not have options for subtitles or other recorded languages, but the script is either on the DVD or online, translate it into your preferred language. Copy and paste the script into an online translation tool. These tools do not provide a perfect translation, but will help you understand what happens in the movies as you follow along with the visual context of the DVD.
