Mats add interest to framed pictures.
Mats are often added to picture frames to add interest or focus to the picture. Mats are available in many sizes and colors, and come both cut and uncut. You can also make your own picture mats out of materials like foam or cardboard. Choose a color that contrasts with your picture frame and that will bring out the colors in your picture. Be sure to measure carefully so that your picture will look its best.
Instructions
1. Measure the opening of your mat. The opening should be at least 1/4 inch smaller than your picture on all sides. For example, if your picture is 8 by 10 inches, your mat opening should be 7 1/2 by 9 1/2 inches. The opening should also be the same distance from the edges all the way around so that it is centered.
2. Mark your opening with a pencil using a straight edge. Draw lines all the way around where the opening will be, not just on the corners.
3. Check the corners with a square to be sure they are right angles. Don't try to eyeball the corners, and keep in mind that the mat itself might not be square.
4. Place the mat on a piece of cardboard so you won't cut your work surface.
5. Carefully cut out the mat with your utility knife, following the lines you drew when you measured.
