Create A Digital Impressionistic Art

Use Photoshop to make a digital Impressionist painting.


Making digital Impressionist art means creating an image that refers to Impressionist painting, which is characterized by painterly brush strokes and dabs of color. You can make a digital Impressionist image in Photoshop by using basic filters and flattening techniques. Find a digital landscape photo, or take one yourself, to create your own Impressionist art.


Instructions


1. Open your landscape photo in Photoshop. Highlight the entire photo by choosing "Select" at the top of the screen, then click "All." Click "Edit," then "Copy."


2. Create a new layer in the layers palette at the bottom right of the screen. Highlight the new layer and paste the entire photo into the new layer.


3. Double-click on the foreground color, located at the bottom left of the screen, and change the color to a light gray, then change the background color to white.


4. Select "Filter" from the top of the screen, scroll down to "Sketch" and click on "Chalk and Charcoal." Set charcoal to "6," chalk to "20" and stroke pressure to "1." Click "OK."


5. Choose "Filter" again, scroll down to "Brush Stroke," then click on "Spatter." Change the smoothness to "5" and spray radius to "10," then click "OK."


6. Click on the drop-down menu in the "Layers" palette, then scroll down to "Luminosity" at the bottom and click on it. Select "Layer" at the top of the page and choose "Flatten" to combine the layers.


7. Create a new layer in the "Layers" palette at the bottom right, and paste the original image into the layer. Choose "Multiply" in the drop-down menu in the "Layers" palette.


8. Select "Image" at the top of the page, then go down to "Adjustments" and click on "Brightness/Contrast." Move the brightness over to 100 percent and the contrast to 60 percent.


9. Choose "Filter" at the top of the screen, then "Artistic" and click on "Underpainting." Set the brush size to 6, texture coverage to 20, texture to canvas, scaling to 100 percent, relief to 4 and set the light to bottom. Press OK.


10. Go to "Edit" at the top and click on "Fade painting," then set the mode to Soft Light. Click on "Layer" at the top and then "Flatten image" to combine the layers.


11. Change the color values, if desired, by choosing "Image" at the top, the "Adjustments" and click on "Selective color." Adjust the slider bar to change the colors.
