Re-size Jpeg Pictures

Resize photos with image-editing software.

Resizing pictures is part of basic image manipulation. Even users who are not graphics designers will need to resize a JPEG photo at some point. You may want to change a picture's size before you upload it to your website or share with others via email, or maybe you found a photo for desktop wallpaper. Many applications can resize images for free. Among these are Windows Live Photo Gallery, part of the Windows Live Essentials package, and IrfanView.

Instructions

Windows Live Photo Gallery

1. Go to the Windows Live Essentials official website. Download and install Windows Live Photo Gallery on your computer if you do not have it yet. The Windows Live Essentials Installer will automatically detect Photo Gallery if it is already installed.

2. Click the "Start" menu button. Type "Photo Gallery" in the search box and select "Windows Live Photo Gallery" in the results. Or, click the "Start" menu button, go to the "Windows Live" folder and click "Windows Live Photo Gallery."

3. Click "All Photos and Videos" on the folder pane on the left when Photo Gallery launches. Click through the folders until you find the JPEG file you want to resize. Photo Gallery will display all images in that folder as thumbnails.

4. Click the JPEG file to select it. You will see a check mark in its box, indicating it is active.

5. Go to the "File" menu and click "Resize." You will see a list of sizes available. The dimensions are given in pixels and refer to the longest side of the picture. For instance, a "Medium" or 1024 pixels for a 4-by-6 image, will apply to the 1024 pixel size to the 6-inch side. The shorter side will be scaled proportionally.

6. Click the size you want for the JPEG picture. Or click "Custom" to enter the image size manually.

7. Click the "Browse" button to change the folder to save the photo to, or leave the default in and click "Resize and Save."

IrfanView

8. Download IrfanView and install using the setup program. Run IrfanView by opening the "Start" menu and clicking the IrfanView link.

9. Click "File" and then click "Open." Or click the "Open" icon, which looks like a file folder. Search your folders for a JPEG picture to resize. Click the file and click "Open." When IrfanView displays the JPEG file, go to the "Image" menu and click "Resize/Resample."

10. Choose one of the "Standard Dimensions," or click "Set New Size" to enter a new size in pixels, centimeters or inches. If you would rather use percentages, click "Select New Size as Percentage of Original." Enter the new size.

11. Check the box next to "Preserve Aspect Ratio" if you want to make sure the image stays proportional. Click "OK."
