Use an image editing application to resize JPG images.
A JPG (or JPEG) is a common file type used for digital images. You can save an illustration, photograph, screenshot or any other image in the JPG format. If your JPG file is too big or if you would like to increase or decrease the image's dimensions, you can use an image editing application to resize the JPG to suit your needs.
Instructions
1. Turn on your computer and locate the JPG file you wish to resize. Right-click the image file and click the "Copy" option, or highlight the file and choose "Copy" from the Edit menu. Use the "Paste" function from the Edit menu to create a copy of your JPG file so you have a backup of your original image.
2. Open an image editing application. If you do not already have an image editor or graphic design program installed on your operating system, use a free online image editor from Aviary.com or Pixlr.com (see links in the Resource section) or purchase a graphic design program like Adobe Photoshop or CorelDRAW and install it on your computer.
3. Open the JPG file that you wish to resize. Click on the "File" menu within your image editing application and choose "Open." Locate the JPG file that you wish to resize and click "OK." If you are using an online image editor, you must upload the JPG file to the Internet instead of opening it directly from your hard drive.
4. Click on the "Image" or "Edit" menu within your image editing program. Select the "Image Size," "Image Resize" or "Preferences" menu. Enter the pixel dimensions for your desired image size. Make sure to keep the pixel length and width proportionate when resizing your JPG to avoid distorting the image. For example, if your original image is twice as wide as it is high, your resized image should also be twice as wide as it is high. Click "OK" to the view the JPG image at its new size.
5. Save the updated JPG file. Use the "File" menu and click the "Save" option to save the changes you made to your JPG file.
