Contemporary Modern Interior Decor Ideas

Modern designs are simple and clutter-free.

With careful consideration, a contemporary and modern home can be sleek and classy but still maintain that comforting feeling of "home." From painting styles to furniture to even carpeting, there are a number of design aspects to consider when incorporating modern twists into the aesthetic of your space.

Paint and Wall Decoration

Paint and wall treatment is the first step. A coat of paint can determine the overall palette for the rest of the room and set the tone for finish with accent decorations such as lamps, rugs and plants. Contemporary designs often showcase very bright and vibrant colors that leave a bold impression. Try colors such as violet, lime, orange or fuchsia. Consider using a bold color on one wall of the room and then leaving the other walls white or another neutral tone. Murals can be used to decorate one wall of a room as well. These murals should showcase bright colors and contemporary art designs such as blocks or flowers.

Furniture

Contemporary modern furniture is sleek and minimalistic. Coffee tables and accent tables that feature curved lines rather than straight lines can make the furniture appear less bulky. In modern design, couches and other furniture tend to be solid in color and should not match your wall color directly, but rather accent it. For example, an accent wall that is orange can pair well with brown, white or lighter orange colored furniture. Use tables and other accent furniture pieces that are not the same color as your main furniture and will pop out against your dramatic accent wall.

Accessories

No room is complete without a few decorative accessories to bring everything together. Accessories can range from vases to lamps to railings for your staircase. Use lamps that have multiple bulbs on the same lamp or a large floor lamp that is covered in a paper shade. When purchasing other accessories such as shelving or vases, select items that match a color other than your furniture or accent wall. For example, a room that has an orange accent wall can be paired with white shelving and large white vases to make the orange wall pop out even more. Less is always more with a modernist aesthetic, and things should be kept clutter-free.

Rugs and Carpeting

Find rugs that pull in the accent colors of the room. For example, a room with an orange accent wall, white accessories and brown couches can benefit from an accent rug that has large orange, white and brown circles on it. This rug should be placed in the center of the room in order to bring the entire design together.
