Headboard
When you hear the word "headboard" you probably think of a large, clunky piece of furniture that is largely traditional but not always stylish. However, new design has innovative ideas for headboards that can fit in with any type of room, even minimalistic styles. Choose one that you love and that matches your decor.
Artwork Headboard
A large piece of artwork at least your bed's width can be hung about 4 inches above your bed. The best options are those that are graphic with minimal subjects and contrasting colors. You can use a bold frame or mount it on a canvas for a more seamless look. Check out arts and crafts stores and new artist openings for originals and prints that would be suitable for a headboard. It will then become the focal point of your entire room.
Painted Headboard
If you're low on cash but high on artistic style, you can paint the wall behind your bed to look like a stylish headboard. Choose contrasting colors to paint the inside of the headboard and a border. Tape off the area that you want to look like a headboard. Paint it in, and then tape off a border to frame it. Some great color combinations are black and white, aqua and brown, lime and cream, or violet and white. Choose a color combination that stands out in your room for a stark contrast as a focal point.
Furniture Headboard
You can place odd pieces of furniture behind your bed to look like a headboard that was always meant to be there. If you have a bookcase that is the same width as your bed, just pull your bed out from the wall and place the bookcase behind the head of the bed. It will look like you have an expensive bookshelf bed, and you can line it with knickknacks, books or pictures. You can also slide a decorative screen (such as a shoji) behind your bed for a less bulky option. Experiment with other pieces of furniture to create the look you want.
