What's Duct Tape Made From

What Is Duct Tape Made Of?

Duct tape was first produced around 1942 and was called "duck tape" for its waterproof nature. Its materials make it a strong and sturdy tape with a reputation for being able to fix everything.

Beginnings

Duct tape begins as cotton mesh, also called cotton duck (another reason behind the original "duck tape" nomenclature). This is similar to cloth medical tape.

Quality

Higher-quality duct tapes will be made from cotton with a tighter weave, which strengthens the tape and makes it easier to tear.

Coating

Duct tape's polyethylene coating is what makes it waterproof. Because of its flexibility, it helps the duct tape stick to irregular surfaces.

Adhesive

Duct tape adhesive is made from rubber and provides a stronger attachment than other types of tape.

Fun Fact

Despite duct tape's strength, you shouldn't actually use it on ducts, as it cannot withstand extreme temperature changes.
