New York City is famously known as the city that never sleeps. Even throughout the nights, when most cities have a slowdown in activity, New York City still marches on, providing entertainment for locals and tourists alike. Most activities available in New York during the day are also available at night. This includes things such as visiting museums, taking in movies or visiting arcades.
Attend the Theater
People flock to New York City for its Broadway plays, and many of them are available for night performances. Aside from Broadway, New York offers many smaller theater options. Kraine Theatre is home to the NY Neo-Futurists and their late-night show, "Too Much Light Makes Baby Go Blind," a recurring 2010 showcase. Late-night patrons can also take in a show of the weird and wild variety with Ars Nova's annual "Showgasm."
Attend a Music Event
Concerts at Radio City Music Hall or Madison Square Garden occur regularly in New York. In addition to these big-name venues, smaller local acts perform at a variety of bars, clubs and other venues across the city. Barbes in Brooklyn features world music in addition to writers reading their works. Glasslands Gallery has live music, dance parties and interactive movie screenings for late-night patrons.
Visit a Comedy Show
Comedy shows are popular in New York City and a number of comedy venues are available around the city. The People's Improv Theater features professional comedians as well as improv comedy teams each Wednesday. Caroline's on Broadway has seen the likes of Saturday Night Live's Darrell Hammond and actor John Witherspoon honing their comedy craft on the stage. Some comedy clubs require that you purchase tickets beforehand but others, such as the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, have tickets available at the door.
Dine Out
Late-night patrons often need somewhere to stop for a bite to eat, and the city accommodates these customers well. The West Village's 'ino offers Italian panini sandwiches and other Italian snacks for a low cost. Slightly more expensive is the Athens Cafe, located in Queens. This Greek restaurant serves sandwiches, salads and other Greek meals. Its coffee is a favorite among late-night patrons. The Bagel Cafe and Ray's Pizza supplies the East Village with typical New York eats 24 hours a day.
Go Shopping
New York's shopping industry is huge and supports people's late-night habits. Bibliophiles can get their book fix at Strand Bookstore, a place which sells used books and discounted new books. For comic, graphic novel and manga enthusiasts, Forbidden Planet stays open late. Clothing shopping options include Search and Destroy, The Dressing Room Boutique and Bar and By Robert James.
