Believe it or not, you don't have to rip out that tile to get a fresh new look and color in your kitchen. Painting your tile can be a simple solution to a drab room with outdated tile. After following these simple steps, your room can look up to date in no time.
Instructions
1. Clean the tile and grout well. Use a strong detergent solution on the tile surface. Use bleach or hydrogen peroxide on the grout to remove any mold or mildew. Rinse thoroughly.
2. Sand the tile. The paint won't stick if you skip this step. Use a fine grit sandpaper. Feel free to use an electric sander on large areas. Remove all dust from tile area.
3. Prime your tile with a product suggested for glossy surfaces. After the second coat of primer has dried, lightly sand the area again. Remember to remove all dust from the tile.
4. Paint your tile. Oil-based paints are suggested. If you are painting tile on walls, around fireplaces or countertops, it is best to use a semi-gloss or high gloss paint. For floors you will need to use a polyurethane paint or specific satin finish floor paint.
5. Wait two to three days for the paint to dry. Then apply a coat of urethane to the tile. This is highly recommended for tile floors and protects your newly painted tile.
