Draw Anime Faces For Novices

Draw anime faces.

"Anime" refers to Japanese-style animated films, and though often associated with children's cartoons, anime depicts themes and subjects for all age groups and literary interests---including action and horror films for adults. The art form's roots blend traditional Japanese art with early American animation, especially that of Walt Disney. Anime features characters with enormous eyes, faces shaped like hearts and slender bodies. The animation itself typically appears somewhat choppy compared to American animation because anime uses fewer distinct frames per second.

Instructions

1. Form the outline of an anime head: Draw a large "D" on your paper. Ensure that each side of the letter is curved and that its right side rises up slightly.

2. Form the right eye: At the intersection of the horizontal and vertical centers of the face outline, draw a large "U." Then, connect its top points with a curve that bows upward slightly. Make the height and width of the "U" about the same size. Ensure the letter's size is about one-quarter the height of the face outline, and make the letter's top right point slightly higher than its left point.

3. Form the left eye: Draw another "U," whose left edge joins with the face outline's left edge. Make the width and height of this "U" three-quarters of the same dimensions in the right "U" (eye). Align the bottom edge of the left "U" with the bottom of the right "U."

4. Form the right eye's iris (the circle surrounding the pupil): Draw a large "U" inside the "U" of the right eye. Align the top of the iris "U" with the outer top of the eye "U." The new U should fill most of the space inside the outer U, and have the same amount of space on the left, right and bottom sides.

5. Color the iris: Fill the iris with a medium gray value. You can achieve this by applying moderate pressure with the wide edge of your pencil tip.

6. Add the highlight: Using a small eraser, clear two circular spaces at these positions: the iris's upper left and lower right corners.

7. Create the pupil: Draw a black "U" at the center of the iris. Align the top of this "U" with the iris's top.

8. Repeat steps 4 through 7 to create the left eye's iris and pupil, but leave no white space at the iris' right edge.

9. Draw each eyebrow as a wide, thick, dark, upside-down "V" over each eye.

10. Form the nose as a small, backward "L" below and in between the eyes. Ensure the L's long leg slants slightly up and right, rather than straight up.

11. Form the lips: Draw a tiny "M" at the midpoint of the space between the nose's tip and the face's chin. A small space below the "M," draw an equally tiny line that curves very slightly upward. This line is the shadow under the lower lip.
