Approaches For Painting A Wall With Texture

Knockdown texture will make blemishs on walls easier to cover up.

Texturing a wall can lend a special effect to a wall, like the appearance of old leather. It can also help even out a wall that may have some blemishes in it. You can paint a textured wall any color you want, but some colors look better with certain textures.

Orange Peel and Knockdown

Orange peel texture is a mild texture that resembles an orange peel. Knockdown is similar to orange peel, but it is a stronger texture that is used on more blemished walls. To achieve this texture, simply mix a texture powder and spray it onto the wall. The difference between these two textures is achieved by the size of the nozzle on the sprayer. Smaller sprayers will produce smaller lumps of texture. For knockdown, use a larger nozzle. After the texture is sprayed, you lightly smooth it out by knocking down the small painted areas of texture. This is how the wall will be smoother.

Aged Leather

An aged leather look will give your wall the appearance of an older, vintage piece of leather. This is a good texturing option to use in offices or studies, but can be used anywhere. To get this look, prime and paint a wall as you normally would. On the second coat, drag a wallpaper brush across the wet paint. This will create the leather effect. While you can paint these walls any color, they look best in colors like light blue, dark maroon, brown or any other colors that are reminiscent of leather.

Crinkle

Crinkle walls are easy to paint and will create a crinkled paper look on your wall. This is simply done by putting plain tissue paper semi-crinkled on the wall before you paint the wall. The paper will remain on the wall, so make sure to use white paper. This is good especially if your walls have some gashes in them, as the asymmetrical nature of this crinkle wallpaper will help hide them. You can use any paint color with this type of texture.

Plaster

Create the effect of having plastered walls with the use of various paint shades. This is more of a painting technique than a texture. It will come out much smoother than other forms of texture, but the paint shades will give it the appearance of Venetian plaster walls. You can use any color paint with this technique as well. If you use a Milano Plaster Tool, this technique will be easier to execute.
