Silk Painting Ideas

Silk Painting Ideas

Silk is by far the most alluring of fabrics because it is warm in winter, cool in summer, and it allows the skin to breathe. Silk also makes a great medium on which to paint. Silk painting and dyeing started in Asia and spread to Europe over 100 years ago. The French perfected the painting and dyeing technique, bringing beautiful art to life. The tradition is spreading into the United States with fervor among artisans.

Silk Scarves

Since silk is an all-season's fabric, it makes a nice canvas for personalized scarves. Painting a silk scarf is easy, plus it can be designed to match any outfit or add a punch of color when needed.

Silk Wall Art

The proteins in silk cause it to absorb much more dye than traditional paper art. This is possibly what gives silk paintings their life and vibrancy. Homemade silk wall art can liven up any home or workspace and add a touch of class that printed reproductions of art can't.

Silk Curtains

Since silk comes in so many textures, weaves, and thicknesses, it can make for interesting window dressings. Paint gauze like silk for a touch of color and a stained glass effect. Paint thicker weaves of silk for custom-colored and designed drapes.

Silk Clothing

Give outdated silk clothing new life by painting it in vibrant colors or designs. A simple white silk blouse can become the centerpiece of an outfit. Homemade silk skirts are easy to do, and with a little paint or dye, they can be made to look expensive or fun.

Silk Handbags

Last year's clutch or handbag can be given new life with a fresh silk painting. Tie a silk scarf to the handbag, or recover it by using special glue or sewing the silk-dyed material to the exterior.

Silk Textiles

Larger bolts of cloth can be painted or dyed to create table runners, tablecloths, and even duvet covers or bed spreads. Painting and dyeing smaller pieces, and sewing them together to make a quilt can be a fun and rewarding home project.

Silk Ties and Hankies

Hand-painted and sewn silk ties (for men or women) and hankies can make anyone feel special. From fun, funky, to functional, smaller silk items are an easy addition to any outfit or gift.

Silk Wrapping Paper

Make wrapping paper. Instead of using traditional paper, paint, dye, and sew silk cloth to use for wrapping gifts. As a bonus, reuse the silk wrap as a scarf or tie, or use as another gift.
