Papier mache projects are fun for students.
Papier mache is the perfect project for all students. It is a creative art project that offers limitless possibilities for multiple classes. You can use papier mache to create bowls, boxes, vases, lampshades, animals, figures and even puppets, depending on what molds are offered and what objects are available for this project.
Instructions
Preparing Pulp
1. Homemade pulp can be made out of various types of paper or napkins. Instruct students to cut or rip the paper or napkins into small pieces or strips. Soak paper in water and leave overnight. You can also use ready-to-mix pulp, which is available at craft stores and may not require soaking overnight. Have students follow the package instructions.
2. To color pulp, instruct students to add a small amount of dye along with the water. You could use colored napkins as a substitute. After the paper has soaked, have students use a mixer or hand blender to break down the paper into pulp. Strain the pulp over a bowl to extract excess water and dye.
3. Add PVA glue to damp pulp. Add about 1/2 oz. glue per 1/2 lb. pulp.
Applying Pulp to a Mold
4. Use various objects to make molds, such as balls, cans, bottles, boxes, balloons or any other object that will help form a specific shape.Keep in mind that some objects will need to be removed from the papier mache, while other items such as cardboard or string will not.
5. Instruct students to evenly apply petroleum jelly or lotion to the object and then wrap in plastic wrap. If you are using a balloon, skip this step.
6. Instruct students to apply pulp to the object in an even layer. If it's too thick, the pulp won't dry. If the layer is too thin, the papier mache will break. If you plan on removing the covered object, do not cover it completely. For example, cover only half of a ball to create a bowl. Allow the pulp to dry completely.
7. After the pulp has dried, ease the shape off the mold. Remove plastic wrap from the dried pulp. If you are using a balloon, simply pop the balloon and remove. Use a knife to smooth edges if desired.
