During the AKA debutante ball, one of the young ladies is crowned queen.
The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was established in 1908. There are local chapters of the sorority on colleges, universities and graduate schools across the United States. Many local chapters host annual debutante balls or cotillions. Each year a select group of young women in high school are chosen to participate in the debutante ball. During the ball, the young women participate in workshops, develop social etiquette, interact with community leaders, engage in community service, conduct fundraising events and receive scholarships.
Instructions
1. Meet the minimum academic and social requirements. Attend an accredited high school. Earn a minimum grade point average of 2.5. Participate in extracurricular activities and community service.
2. Obtain a letter of recommendation. The letter must be written by a community leader from a school, church, volunteer or civic organization. The community leader must not be your friend or relative.
3. Write an essay explaining your qualifications for becoming an Alpha Kappa Alpha debutante. Highlight your academic achievements and extracurricular activities. Mention any awards and certificates you have received. Emphasize your community and volunteer service. Make sure the essay does not contain typos or grammatical errors.
4. Fill out a debutante ball application. Include all requested information such as a copy of your official high school transcript, letter of recommendation, essay and an application fee. The fees vary among the AKA chapters. Submit the completed application to the local AKA chapter.
