Cutting your foam core board doesn't have to be a challenge.
The uses for foam core board seem endless, but the clean edge you want when cutting your foam core is not always easy to get. Whether you are making a school project, costume or art installation, you need just a few tools to cut foam core. Using a utility knife, a straight edge and a pattern, if you have a complicated shape to cut, can help you cut your foam board with clean, smooth edges.
Instructions
1. Place your foam core board on a flat surface you can cut on. Bear in mind that the utility knife may come into contact with the surface, so if necessary, lay old newspaper down to protect the cutting surface.
2. Lay your straight edge or pattern on the foam core board in the exact place you would like to cut your pieces from.
3. Trace your line or pattern with your chalk.
4. Lightly cut through the topmost layer of the foam core board---the upper paper layer of board---with your utility knife. Longer cutting strokes reduce the chance that your foam core will end up with ridged or scuffed edges.
5. Cut through the middle layer of the foam core board---the foam layer---with your utility knife.
6. Cut through the final layer of the foam core board---the bottom paper layer---with your utility knife.
