Help Make Your Own Wooden Jewellery Box

If you're a novice woodworker or crafter, you can make a jewelry box from wood. A wooden jewelry box is simple to construct, and you can decorate it with a piece of velvet for a liner, or with a mirror or photo on the inside lid or base. All you need is a basic knowledge of measuring and the ability to use a handsaw or power saw.

Instructions

1. Select the style and grade of wood to make the jewelry box. Cedar and redwood are the most commonly used woodgrains in jewelry boxes. You also can use cherry wood, but it is softer than cedar and redwood.

2. Mark the wood with a pencil after measuring and before cutting. Cut six pieces of wood 6 by 6 inches each with a handsaw or more accurately and smoothly with a jigsaw.

3. Sand the edges of the pieces, making sure all sides are free of jagged ends and roughness. Apply stain, paint, clear coat or other decorative finish to the wooden jewelry box.

4. Glue the bottom of the box to the side and front panel pieces using wood glue. Press and hold the pieces together for several minutes to make sure they are set. You can use paneling or other small nails instead of wood glue.

5. Attach the top of the box to the back panel piece by nailing a hinge near each corner of the lid's backside. Nail a latch to the front side of the lid and the front panel piece if desired.

6. Allow all pieces to dry thoroughly if you used wood glue. Attach the lid and back panel pieces to the bottom and side panel pieces with wood glue or small nails. Do not glue the front of the lid piece to front panel piece.

7. Glue a box liner in the base of the box with a hot glue gun. Velvet, fur or felt are common choices. You also can attach a mirror or photo to the inside of the box lid using hot or craft glue. Adding adornments to the completed wooden jewelry box is optional.
