Drawing faces is a skill that will impress others.
If you have artistic talent and enjoy drawing, you will no doubt want to draw people's faces. This type of art is also known as portraiture and is a wonderful way to show off your skills. You can even draw the portrait of a loved one as a cherished gift. If you have some artistic talent, you can learn to draw faces.
Instructions
1. Use a pencil to draw an oval egg shape on a piece of sketch paper. Make the bottom narrower for the chin. Do not bring the bottom to a point; keep it curved or even slightly squarish, as some people have square jaws.
2. Draw a straight line running vertically across the oval. This will be a guide to separate the two sides of the face. Draw a horizontal line halfway down the face to indicate the placement of the eyes. Draw a smaller horizontal line about 2 inches above the chin for the mouth, and then an even small one about 1 inch above that as a guide for the nose.
3. Sketch eyebrows just above the guideline you created for the eyes. Give them the detail of hair by using your pencil to create small, separate strokes. Create an arc shape as you finish.
4. Draw the eyes in almond shapes on either side of the long vertical line running through the face. Make sure to create each eye through the middle of the horizontal guideline that represents the eyes. Fill in the lids above the almond shapes in an arc shape. Draw the irises of the eyes by creating a half-circle in each of the almond shapes.
5. Draw the nose by starting with two dots for the nostrils on the base of the short horizontal line beneath the eyes. Connect them by filling in the septum, which is between the nostrils. This area should be round. Draw the sides of the nose by making half-circle shapes outside either nostril. Add the side of the nose by creating a line for it running from the eyebrow down to the middle of the nose. Do the same on the other side, but use lighter pressure for varying shading.
6. Sketch the mouth, using the horizontal line below the nose as the guide. Make sure the middle is right on the line. Draw a curve going down for the lower lip. The upper lip should be the same, except for the middle, which should have a rounded "M" shape.
7. Erase the guidelines you created before you filled in the features. Use your eraser carefully so that you don't erase any of the details you just drew.
8. Add in detailing. Use the side of your pencil's tip to add shading, including cheekbones on either side of the face. Draw hair in any style you want.
