Choose Equipment for a Personal Recording Studio
If you think you are ready to set up a personal recording studio, follow these steps to select your equipment. The main thing to remember is to start small before you invest a lot of money into the project. With the right equipment, you can soon be recording your own audio files.

1. Set a budget and stick to it. There are so many options out there that you may be tempted to buy more equipment than you can afford as you set up your recording studio.
2. Use your current computer. Chances are it has the basic qualities you need for a good personal recording studio. You need to be running Window XP or Vista on a PC. Macs come equipped with the necessary operating platform.
3. Upgrade your computer's memory to at least 512MB, if necessary. Also, purchase adequate storage space, if it's not already available on your computer. Choose additional USB hard drives or flash drives to increase your computer's storage capacity. A DVD burner is another good storage option.
4. Choose a monitor headset and microphone. You can start with a midrange set for these pieces of equipment. There are plenty of good options to choose from. Also, choose speakers that allow you to hear your recorded material.
5. Purchase or download cross-platform sound editor software. There are plenty of freeware and shareware versions you can try. Use it to edit your music and sound files. Or, if you want a higher end product, shop around. Sometimes you can find used copies at discounted prices.
