Fabric Rubber stamping & Painting

Painting on fabric can produce unusual effects.

Fabric stamping and painting are ways of creating one-of-a-kind designs. Fabric painting is often more complex than stamping, although artists use both techniques to stunning effect.

Fabrics

Although fiber artists have used virtually any fabric for stamping and painting, plain white cottons absorb paint well and predictably, and offer the greatest control over the design. Silks are also a popular choice for stamping and painting when the end product will be a garment.

Materials

Fabric paints of different consistencies and types, specifically for either painting or stamping, are available from manufacturers. In addition to conventional flat paints, metallic paint, iridescent paint and textural paints are available.

Designs

Designs depend on the preferences of the fiber artist. Fabric painting can range from abstracts to detailed paintings. Stamping can employ commercially bought stamps, including those intended for scrapbooking, or custom stamps cut by the artist.

Techniques

The most traditional technique is simply painting or stamping directly onto fabric. You can add salt and chemicals for special effects. In addition, airbrushing is increasingly popular.

Uses

Fabric stamping and painting can create clothing or embellish quilting and other fiber arts.
