Start Writing Your Personal Book

So you have a great idea for a novel? Say goodbye to writer's block, and start writing your book today. Many people have great story ideas, but have a hard time getting past the first chapter. The key is to write at least a little bit everyday. Even if you have a full-time job and a house full of children, you can make time to write your novel, whether it be early in the morning or late at night. Make your novel a priority and keep your writing skills sharpened by joining writing groups and partaking in creative writing exercises.

Instructions

1. Develop the plot of your novel by creating a timeline. Many writers come up with ideas as they write, but if you already have a beginning, middle and an end in mind, plot your story before you begin writing. You may want to update your ideas as you write, but a timeline will provide a great starting point - and a way to get past annoying "writer's block."

2. To make your characters believable, create personal profiles for each one. For instance, assign a birthdate, favorite food, nickname and other distinguishing characteristics to your characters, to make them seem real to your readers. Create memorable events that may have happened in their lives, and divide their stories into "before" and "after" this life-altering experience.

3. Make time to write each day. Even if you are busy with work or other interests, designate an hour or two to write your novel. The hardest part about writing is actually sitting down to do it, so make working on your novel a daily habit. Set goals, such as writing a chapter or two each day.

4. Join a writing group. Writing can be a lonely business, so it helps to have a like-minded group of people to bounce ideas off of and to brainstorm with. Attend weekly meetings and have something new to share each week. If there aren't any writing groups in your area, start one.

5. Keep a journal. Recording your daily thoughts will help you to get into the habit of writing each day. Don't be afraid to freewrite - great ideas can be formed by random musings. Keep a notebook by your bed so that you can record your dreams each morning, and carry a small pad of paper with you when you are out and about as you never know when a great idea will strike.
