Art Programs In Canada

A number of different academic and professional institutions in Canada offer art programs.

A wide variety of art programs are offered by universities, colleges and professional schools across Canada. Available specializations include visual art, art history, multi-media and graphic design, computer animation, music, dance, and theater to a name a few. In addition to their differences in course content, programs differ in length and cost and in the degrees they offer. Many art degree graduates go on to become teachers, museum curators, art exhibitionists, graphic artists, photographers, and book illustrators.

York's Bachelor of Fine Arts

York University's Faculty of Fine Arts offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree to students who complete a four year visual arts program with most of their course work conducted in a studio. Applied art training in drawing, print media, photography, painting and sculpture is offered, and this training is complimented by classroom courses covering art history, theory and criticism. On campus, galleries allow students to exhibit their work throughout the year, and an annual exhibit of student work is organized for each studio group. Tuition for the 2009/2010 school year was $5,761 for Canadian residents; international students typically pay double this amount.

Sheridan College's Computer Animation Certification

Sheridan College's computer animation program is recognized internationally, and many of its graduates are currently working in large Hollywood studios; the School of Animation, Art and Design claims to be the "first school to begin teaching computer animation". The program is eight months, during which time students are taught story structure, character development, acting, art direction, cinematography and production design. The latest in 3-D computer animation software and technology is used to prepare students for immediate entry to the industry upon graduation; graduates are awarded an Ontario post-graduate certificate. Applicants to the program must have a post-secondary degree in the arts and four to five years of relevant work experience; your portfolio will likely be reviewed. Eligible students will also be familiar with Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft of Macintosh operating systems. Tuition for the program's two terms was $11,997 for 2009/2010.

York-Sheridan Bachelor of Design

A four year art design program is offered jointly by York University's Department of Design and Sheridan College's School of Animation, Arts and Design. Course content for the program is split between the two institutions, with students taking applied design courses at Sheridan and academic based curriculum at York. Applied design courses include interactive design, graphic design and typography. An internship is offered in Toronto during a student's third year, and a Bachelor of Design degree is awarded upon completion of the program. Entry to the program can be competitive and decisions are based equally on the applicant's portfolio and their academic average. Applicants can apply through either institution, but not both. Tuition was $8,557 for the 2010-2011 school year.
