Wii Sports lets you play tennis without leaving your house.
The Nintendo Wii and Wii Sports -- although they work in unison -- are two entirely different things. Wii Sports is one of many game titles released for the Nintendo Wii since it was introduced. The Nintendo Wii is the actual console you play the game on and is similar to an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3.
The Difference
The Nintendo Wii is an interactive video game console that allows you to control characters through a wireless controller known as the Wii Remote. The Nintendo Wii has numerous video game titles available, some of which are only suitable for a mature audience. Wii Sports is an interactive video game which can be played on the Nintendo Wii. In earlier versions, Wii Sports was included when you purchased a Nintendo Wii. Wii Sports cannot be played on other video game consoles such as the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, making it an exclusive title.
The Game
When you play Wii Sports, you will have the option to partake in many sports, including tennis, golf, baseball, bowling and boxing. All sports are part of the same game, meaning you do not need to insert different discs to play a different sport. Using the Wii Remote will allow your character to mimic your moves. For example, you can use the remote as a tennis racket, swinging it like you would a real racket, and your character will follow along. For boxing, you can hold onto the remote and punch toward the screen. Your character will mimic this move, delivering jabs to his opponent.
The Wii Bundle
While you can no longer purchase a Nintendo Wii with Wii Sports included, other options are available. For example, as of 2011 you can purchase a Wii that comes with the Mario Kart game and a Wii Wheel. The Wii Wheel is used to control your character's vehicle in the Mario Kart game. You will also receive one Wii Remote, the appropriate cables to activate the console, and a Nunchuk controller. The Nunchuk controller attaches to the Wii remote, giving you more control of the characters within a game. The starting price for this bundle is $149.99 in spring 2011.
Attachments
Attachments can be added to the Wii Remote to increase the reality of certain events within Wii Sports. For example, you can purchase an inexpensive bundle package that includes a baseball bat, tennis racket and golf club attachment. Most video game stores should have these attachments in stock. The attachments connect to the remote, changing the appearance of the remote without changing how it is used. Once attached, your Wii Remote will look like a mini baseball bat, golf club or tennis racket.
